New Delhi: Since the end of the 2023-24 season, Thiago Alcantara’s retirement has been a hot topic. Now, at the age of 33, he has officially announced that he is hanging up his boots. Thiago’s last season was a challenging one, with injuries keeping him out of action for all but six minutes.

Thiago Alcantara took on X and announced his decision, saying he was “grateful” for his career. During his active years, he played for FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. The midfielder left Liverpool when his contract expired last month. In total, he made 98 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s team, winning the FA Cup and the League Cup in 2022. However, in Klopp’s farewell campaign at Liverpool, he was unable to make an impact after being sidelined for most of the season due to injuries.

Thiago, always praised as a talented midfielder, rose through the ranks of Barcelona and made his debut in 2009 at the age of 18. He was one of the key players in the Barcelona team in 2010 when they won La Liga and the Champions League under Pep Guardiola. For Spain he made 46 appearances and scored twice. In the following two seasons he would win another Spanish title, the Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey.

Thiago’s injuries robbed fans of a generations-long run under Jurgen Klopp

He joined Bayern in 2013. In his seven seasons at the club, he won the Bundesliga title every year, four German Cups, the Club World Cup and the Champions League in 2020. He achieved cult status during his time in Munich. Guardiola, then Bayern’s manager, famously said “Thiago or nothing” for the club’s transfer strategy and eventually signed for €25 million. His reputation preceded him when he joined the Reds.

Klopp once said that anyone interested in football should see Thiago play. He was technically one of the most solid players of his generation, and that was an aspect the former Liverpool Manager was aware of.

During his time at Liverpool he showed glimpses of his best self on occasion. His debut against Everton began with his usual ability to hold the ball at will, blow past opponents and break lines with quick passes. He had to be taken off the pitch and did not return to action until Christmas after a five-month absence. This was a foretaste of what his time at Liverpool would be like.

Perhaps his best performance in the Reds outfit came against Manchester United in 2022, when Liverpool won 4-0. With his brilliant tackles and interceptions, he made Man United’s time on the pitch a nightmare. Another highlight came when he scored against FC Porto in the Champions League.

What’s next for the Spanish wizard?

For most Liverpool fans, the thought after the announcement was: “What could have happened?” In a game ruled by margins, Thiago was the closest to technical perfection when it came to taking charge and dictating the game from midfield. Anyone who follows football will agree that Thigao was a magician when fit.

There are now reports that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is keen to bring Thiago to the Catalan club as a coach this summer. Although there are no official reports, everyone is hoping that the Spaniard’s footballing genius will come to the fore again.
