25-year-old man arrested after pensioner was raped near Matibidi

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after a 77-year-old woman was repeatedly assaulted and raped for two days in her home in Dikweteng village in Dientjie, near Matibidi. The case was reported to police on Wednesday, July 3.

The man was arrested about three months ago and charged with rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and burglary after an 83-year-old woman was stabbed and raped in Didimala village in Dientjie in March.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Magonseni Nkosi said the man is again facing similar charges and is expected to appear in Dientjie Magistrate’s Court today, Tuesday, July 9.

“It is alleged that the 77-year-old woman was able to call for help on Friday 5 July. The suspect is said to have escaped before community members responded to the call. The incident was reported to the police, who immediately launched an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect in Ohrigstad on Sunday 7 July,” Nkosi said.

According to him, preliminary investigations indicated that the man was involved in the crimes against the 83-year-old victim.

“The suspect was arrested and released on R1 000 bail. The pensioner was admitted to hospital but died in May. The last victim is also recovering in hospital after sustaining injuries,” Nkosi said.
