The visit was warmly welcomed by the college’s interim Principal and Chief Executive, Lee Campbell, and other senior staff who gave a presentation on the work currently being done across various departments at the college.

Minister Murphy was given an extensive tour of the campus, with staff showing off the state-of-the-art facilities and industry-leading equipment available to students.

Greenbank Campus acts as the SRC hub for construction trades in Newry, offering a wide range of apprenticeships in trades such as bricklaying, electrical engineering, plastering, plumbing and more.

These programs offer a dynamic mix of practical vocational training and recognized qualifications, helping workers gain the skills and experience that employers highly value.

The visit coincided with the Minister’s recent announcement of new skills interventions to support his economic vision, including a new Skills Up programme and the expansion of the apprenticeship scheme. It also provided an opportunity for further discussions on the College’s plans to promote a robust educational future and ensure it continues to produce highly qualified and skilled individuals.

The college is also keen to ensure that there is a joined-up approach to skills development across the island of Ireland. The college recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Louth Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) to develop and deliver advanced training programmes for the manufacturing sector.

During the visit, college staff were given the opportunity to explain their plans, which aim to ensure that participants develop skills that meet the needs of the emerging economy across the island.

Interim Principal and Chief Executive of Southern Regional College, Lee Campbell, said: “We were delighted to welcome Minister of Economy Murphy and other Department officials to our Greenbank campus today.

“This visit was an excellent opportunity to showcase Southern Regional College’s transformative learning environment and discuss our ongoing commitment to advancing student skills through new partnerships and collaborations.”
