Newcastle’s free film screenings running throughout the summer – full list and times

While live sporting events take place in the heart of the city this weekend, with big screens at the Euro 2018 fan zones in Times Square and NX Newcastle, an annual event is also getting in on the action.

NE1 Ltd’s Screen on the Green is back and will be joining in the voting by also showing Wimbledon and the Silverstone Grand Prix. And it will soon follow with the launch of its free film programme.

The big screen will be set up, as usual, in Newcastle’s Old Eldon Square, where deckchairs will be available for people to use on a first-come, first-served basis. Screen on the Green is part of the company’s Summer in the City business improvement programme and this year will screen around 100 films from 20 July to 1 September.

  • And movie fans and families are in for a treat, as the lineup ranges from family favorites to classics and blockbusters, including Barbie; Mean Girls the Musical; La La Land; Mary Poppins Returns and, in a row, all the Toy Story movies. Here’s the list of movies and their timing to watch out for.

NE1’s Screen on the Green film programme

This will be followed by a six-week film programme, followed by screenings of summer sports and the Tour de France. The main event will start on 22 July, with a schedule of two free films per day, at 12 noon and 3 pm.

There will also be Thursday blockbusters and Tuesdays at 10am ‘Toddler Takeovers’ with shorter films and stories for younger viewers. This year there is also an additional weekly ‘Tyneside Takeover’ choice, with NE1 has teamed up with the city’s independent Tyneside Cinema, with the experts and film lovers at the cinema choosing a special touch for Wednesday night.
