The Gen Giammanco Foundation has awarded scholarships to five senior students who will be participating in sports at the university next year. The foundation has also renewed the membership of six current student-athletes.

The foundation, which was founded 14 years ago to help student-athletes continue their athletic careers in college, has raised more than $500,000.

This year’s winners include Caroline Byrne of Carmel, Valeria Cardoso-Lopez of Alvarez, Sabrina Moore of Salinas, and Nicholas Duque and Nate Wedderburn of Monterey.

Byrne will play volleyball at Middlebury College in the fall. Cardoso-Lopez will wrestle at Menlo College, while Moore will play beach volleyball at San Jose State in the spring.

Duque, who was part of Monterey’s State Division IV championship team, will play basketball for Far Eastern University in the Philippines, while Wedderburn will pitch for CSU East Bay next spring.

Extended scholarships were awarded to Diego Chaidez for wrestling (Menlo); Aaliyah Huihui-Martinez for volleyball (St. Michaels); Marie Martorella for softball (Santa Clara); Olivia Silacci-Jensen for beach volleyball (CSU Bakersfield) and Roberto Nunez for baseball (Embry Riddle Aeronautic).

The foundation has awarded a total of $42,500 to recipients this year.
